A trucker’s wife can be a help to her husband when he’s on the road and be a blessing to him when he’s home. But without understanding what it’s like to be a truck driver , they’ll misunderstand some aspects of the work . Therefore the trucker husband, as a man , generally doesn’t express his needs through words.
When a trucker gets home he wants nothing but just BE. He wants to enjoy the comforts that he has missed while on the road. He doesn’t need a to-do list, he doesn’t want an rambling update on local news, he, frankly, doesn’t want ‘to work’. which means he doesn’t want to speak and he doesn’t want to hear. that does not mean he doesn’t love you. He DOES. He just needs some time to rest.
Trucking is 24-7 when you’re on the road. Whether you’re driving, on-duty not driving, in sleeper berth or off-duty- you are still trucking. Even when you are off duty in the truck stop it’s tiring and unconfortable in the world of truckers. It’s constantly around you. That’s not necessarily bad but it’s a draining thing.
When you get home, there is a bit of disorientation . And if you’re only home for a couple of days, you discover that packing an extended list of home-time chores and obligations makes for more stress than you’ll handle. A trucker must relax and decompress for a short time before he can give of himself- and if he’s only home for a couple of days, then what he really needs is to be pampered.
Imagine you coming home from work to stay only a day and a half on weekends. There is a long list of chores that waits for you to get it done and you spend the whole home time to do them. Consequently, you never got time to relax and just enjoy our home time. The fact is that this type of tired that comes from trucking is cumulative. Meaning that if you do not get your R&R, you only get more and more tired. Which means you get more and more frustrated and irritable and fewer and fewer patient and pleasant to be around.

I am sure there’ll be a lot of women who are offended by this statement, but the very fact is, truckers need a break and to be understanded . They’re out there on the road alone and lonely. They do not have support beyond the cb radio, dispatch and a mobile. I know it’s hard being a trucker’s wife and I know sometimes it’s draining for her too. Being alone, missing her husband and not having emocional and physical support when they need it. But if a woman really loves her husband she will understand him and look forward to him coming home.
