Before this occurred they’d produced luxury buses and heavy duty trucks that were rugged and dependable. After the bankruptcy the corporate was managed the main bank of Oakland and also the Waukesha Motor Co. until TA Peterman purchased it in order that he could build trucks for his lumber and logging operations.

Peterbilt’s Beginning

peterbilt history

Originally started in 1939, Peterbilt isn’t the oldest brand of economic vehicles but it’s carved itself an area among the highest truck manufacturing companies within the US. T.A retook the ownership and named the corporate after him. Then he sat a goal to always choose quality and not quantity.  Rather than following this route, the engineers of Peterbilt were sent out into the terrain and on the work sites to talk with the people who would be using the trucks in day-to-day work. This gave an insight into the requirements of the trucker, allowing the Peterbilt brand to be quickly accepted into the heavy duty commercial vehicle community.

The performance of their heavy duty trucks during the Second   World War  helped to solidify their brand for its exceptional quality. After the war, the Peterbilt Motors Co. continued to grow and expand across the US until it had been bought in 1958 by the Pacific Car and Foundry (PACCAR). While PACCAR was also the owner of Peterbilt’s main competitor Kenworth, the trucking subsidiaries remain as two separate brands with their own operations that still compete within the marketplace..
